This is the laser and surgical facility of our practice. Dr. McCune personally performs the vast majority of medical and cosmetic surgical procedures we offer.
Laser hair reduction and other procedures are performed by licensed nursing staff or our medical estheticians under the direct, on site supervision by Dr. McCune.
Surgical procedures include destruction of benign skin lesions, excision of benign and malignant skin lesions and Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
Surgical destruction of benign skin lesions
Dr. McCune and his staff are expertly trained to surgically destroy benign lesions such as warts, moles, skin tags, and seborrheic keratoses. Premalignant lesions can also be effectively treated.
Surgical excision of benign and malignant skin lesions
Those benign skin lesions requiring surgical excision are treated by Dr. McCune in our office-based surgical suite. Great care is taken to repair your skin in a way that maximizes the cosmetic outcome of your scar.
Many skin cancers can be excised under frozen section control at our facilities. Certain malignancies can be effectively destroyed by the Sciton Profile ablative laser.
This is the most accurate surgical technique to treat most non-melanoma skin cancers including basal call and squamous cell carcinomas. Created by Dr. Frederic Mohs over 40 years ago, the procedure that bears his name gives the highest cure rates of any available therapy. During his residency at Mayo Clinic, Dr. McCune was able to spend time with Dr. Mohs in his clinic in Madison, Wisconsin observing him perform Mohs surgery. Dr. McCune has received additional training in this technique and treats those skin cancers that are appropriately managed by the Mohs technique at Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A.

Kansas City Laser and DermaSurgery Center, P.A. is a comprehensive laser center. We have multiple lasers that cover the full spectrum of laser dermasurgery.
At last! A unique laser treatment that can impressively repair fine lines, wrinkles, and improve skin texture and pigmentation with no or minimal healing downtime.
FRAXEL™ laser is the first laser technology that can produce dramatic improvements to aging and sun damaged skin without producing a wound.
The FRAXEL™ laser produces tiny, microscopic sites of laser induced thermal injury (microthermal zones) separated by surrounding zones of normal skin. Rapid healing of the lasered sites occurs from the untreated areas. No visible wound is created. Minimal downtime consists of redness and swelling for 4-5 days and a mild to moderate acne-like flare up that is temporary. Heated collagen in the microthermal zones is remodeled and results in increased skin smoothness and tightening. Up to 29% of the skin surface is fractionally lasered with each treatment. Four to six treatments spaced at least 4 weeks apart produce results that can rival those seen with Facial Laser Sculpture™ ablative laser resurfacing.
Treatments are performed under topical local anesthetic creams and can be done on any area of the face and body. Clinical benefits include improvement in skin texture, pore size, smoothness, brown splotchy discoloration, and wrinkles. Skin tightening may occur. Scars from acne, trauma, and previous surgeries may improve an average of 60-65%. Stretch marks can be softened in appearance. Go to the FRAXEL™ laser website at www.fraxel.com to find out more about the FRAXEL™ Restore laser.
Treating unwanted facial and body hair!
At Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A. we primarily use the Sciton Profile Nd:YAG 1064nm long-pulse laser to treat unwanted facial and body hair.
Although results are sometimes temporary, the laser is capable of producing permanent hair reduction with a series of four to six treatments. Large areas can be treated safely and rapidly with the Sciton Profile laser. The skin surface is actively cooled during laser treatment enhancing comfort and protection from overheating of the skin surface. Topical anesthetic creams can be used to further improve discomfort associated with treatment. Light colored or white hairs will not be affected by laser treatments. The Gemini™ Laser is used for hair reduction in limited areas ( the “unibrow”).
When combined with waxing and a prescription hair reduction cream known as Vaniqa, our hair reduction treatments can improve suffering from shaving irritation, razor “bumps” (pseudofolliculitis), and the embarrassment that comes from having too much facial and body hair.
Laser hair reduction is performed by our licensed and highly trained estheticians under direct on-site supervision by Dr. McCune. The Sciton Profile Nd:YAG 1064 long pulse laser is one of the safest, most powerful and deeply penetrating hair removal lasers available. It can be safely used in people of all skin colors without major concern for changes in pigment (either darkening or lightening).
Tired of that tattoo that once seemed like such a good idea?
You can have your “past” removed at Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A. with the Coherent VersaPulse Help-G Laser using very high energy, ultra-short light pulses (Q-switched). Three different lasers can be used to gradually lighten the inks in decorative tattoos. Traumatic tattoos can be treated as well.
When the laser light passes through the tattoo, it will react with its preferred color of ink. The ink is superheated very rapidly and breaks apart into smaller particles. These smaller ink particles are then removed from the skin by the natural healing processes and relocated to the lymph nodes. The tattoo ink remains there permanently with no subsequent problems.
It is important to have reasonable expectations with laser tattoo removal. It always requires multiple treatments (15+) to achieve maximal lightening. Also, it is impossible to predict whether maximal lightening will be total tattoo removal or only partial lightening. Some inks are unresponsive to laser. Some inks are placed too deep for the laser light to reach.
Although pigment lightening and occasional scarring and can occur, cosmetic end results are usually excellent compared to the other options that can be used to remove tattoos.
We offer two types of leg vein treatments at Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A. Both are effective and well tolerated.
Sclerotherapy (Temporarily Unavailable)
Monthly injections of highly concentrated salt water (hypertonic saline) can reduce the number and intensity of unwanted small diameter leg and spider veins. The injection injures the vein which then collapses and is scarred shut. Sclerotherapy rarely produces surface scarring, but up to 30% of patients can develop new spider veins (matting) as a response to sclerotherapy - induced inflammation. Matting can usually be treated effectively with laser. Occasionally, larger leg veins become inflamed (phlebitis) producing tenderness and surface discoloration.
Nd:YAG 1064 long-pulse Laser (Sciton™ and Gemini™Lasers)
Leg veins can also be successfully treated with laser. Advantages are that there are no needles involved, matting is rare, and veins too small to inject can be successfully treated. The laser can be safely used in people of all colors in all seasons. As with sclerotherapy, multiple treatments are necessary. Results are sometimes unpredictable, but are usually very effective.
Coherent VersaPulse HELP-G:
Three different lasers are in this device:
- Alexandrite 755 – Removes/lightens brown spots, age spots, skin hyperpigmentation and melasma. Can be used to treat acne blackheads. Effective in treating blue, black, and green tattoos.
- Nd:YAG 532 – Also effective in treating brown skin lesions and discoloration. Removes red, orange, yellow, purple, and violet tattoo inks
- Nd:YAG 1064 – Effectively treats deep skin hyperpigmentation from old trauma, wounds, or inflammation. Also treats blue and black tattoos.
Cynosure V-Star Pulsed Dye Laser:
This vascular laser is able to treat all of the same conditions as the KTP 532 Long Pulse laser. The V-Star laser can be used in bruising or non-bruising settings. Very effective to help resolve common warts and other benign skin lesions including sebaceous hyperplasia, molluscum contagiosum, and genital/perianal warts.
This revolutionary laser has changed the nature of “ablative” laser resurfacing. Visit theFRAXEL™ laser page for more information.
KTP 532 Long Pulse – Highly effective vascular laser that treats red discoloration of the skin from chronic flushing/blushing, photodamage, and rosacea. Removes visible spider veins on the face, trunk, and legs. Treats congenital hemangiomas and port wine stains. Effective in treating red marks from inflamed acne. Helps flatten hypertrophic and keloid scars. Improves brown spots, red spots, and stimulates collagen. This laser does not bruise the skin.
Nd:YAG 1064 Long Pulse: Effective at treating vascular lesions, birthmarks, and leg veins. Stimulates collagen formation. Used for laser hair reduction in people of all skin colors.
This laser has three different laser applications in the same device.
- Erbium YAG Short Pulse – This laser removes the skin completely, leaving behind almost no thermal heat injury. Very useful to destroy benign skin lesions superficially with no or minimal scar. Used to improve scars. Special cosmetic applications include:
- Arctic Peel – a superficial laser peel that removes only a partial layer of the skin surface. Combined with a cold air device to chill and numb the skin. Useful for photodamage on the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.
- Laser micropeel – just like the Arctic Peel, except more aggressive.Used on the face only.
- Erbium YAG Long Pulse – This laser is combined with the Erbium YAG – short pulse to add extra thermal heating to the skin not ablated. This is helpful in treating premalignant actinic keratosis as well as superficial basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers. Cosmetically, these two Erbium YAG lasers are used to ablatively resurface the face for dramatic improvement in photoaging and acne scars. Known in our practice as “Facial Laser Sculpture™”, this aggressive laser procedure gives the benefits of C02 laser resurfacing with much less (5% or less) of a chance of developing permanent skin lightening.
- Nd:YAG 1064 Long Pulse – This laser can be used to treat blue leg veins (reticular veins) and red spider veins. The same laser is the laser used in our practice for laser hair reduction. We have two of these lasers in our practice in both the Sciton™ and the Gemini™
Although a few of our cosmetic procedures are performed at Kansas City Dermatology, P.A. and Kansas City DermaSpa the majority of cosmetic dermasurgical procedures and cosmetic laser procedures are performed personally by Dr. McCune at Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A.
Silhouette InstaLift is a non-invasive alternative to a traditional facelift.
It's a simple procedure to re-contour your face by lifting the deeper layers of your skin and increasing long-term collagen production to create a more youthful appearance.
During the procedure Dr. McCune will use sutures with bidirectional cones to reposition and elevate the skin on your face. The in-office procedure typically takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. You will see immediate results and have minimal recovery time after the procedure. Over time the sutures will naturally be absorbed by your body while stimulating production of collagen.
Injectable RF for Skin Tightening
ThermiTight™ is the name of a peer-reviewed protocol described as “thermistor-controlled subdermal skin tightening.” The ThermiRF™ system is used along with a tiny SmartTip™ thermistor probe, which is inserted under the skin to heat subdermal tissues to a user selected specific temperature. During the ThermiTight procedure, internal temperatures are monitored and regulated by the system computer. In addition, Thermal Image Guidance™ provides the physician with real time external temperatures to ensure precision of the heating effect while maintaining safe skin temperatures.
Once you have arrived the day of your procedure the area to be treated will be cleansed and a small amount of anesthetic solution will be injected into the area. A tiny thermistor probe is then inserted under the skin. Dr. McCune will make gentle movements to heat up the tissues to the desired level while monitoring the temperature of the skin internally and externally. The procedure lasts approximately one hour. After your treatment a wrap will be applied to the treatment area. Patients may experience minimal bruising and swelling, but can resume normal activity the next day.
Dr. McCune is the only physician trained in the Kansas City area with ThermiRF®.
Non-invasive Skin Smoothing
ThermiSmooth™ is performed using a specially designed thermistor regulated hand piece. ThermiSmooth delivers precise heating to the skin’s surface. The treatments are gentle and patients often say it feels like receiving a warm massage. ThermiSmooth can be used to tighten skin under and around the eyes, as well as smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Reclaim. Restore. Revive.
Excessive relaxation of the vaginal muscles is a common occurrence after vaginal birth, or due to aging. Damage can diminish sensation during intercourse, reduce sexual satisfaction and change the relationship between partners.
ThermiVa is the first and only temperature controlled radio frequency system, used for non-surgical dermatological application in aesthetics and other medical specialties. ThermiVa treatments deliver controlled thermal energy to the desired areas – external (labia) and/or internal (vaginal).
ThermiVa can help improve vaginal looseness, vaginal dryness, vaginal flatulence, sagging of the labia, excessive vaginal sweating, painful intercourse, reduce leaky bladder symptoms and improve orgasmic dysfunction.
The complete ThermiVa procedure includes 3 separate treatments over a period of 3 months. There is no downtime other than the office appointments, and no anesthetics are required
Reclaim your “pre-baby body”. Restore your satisfaction. Revive your relationship.
Non-invasive Skin Smoothing
ThermiSmooth® Body is performed by heating the areas under the skin, providing a temporary reduction of cellulite.
We can target many different areas of the body including arms, abdomen, hips and thighs.
A series of 3-6 treatments are performed over the course of 6-8 weeks. Patients often say it feels like receiving a warm massage.
SculpSure is a light-based body contouring procedure to reduce stubborn fat problem areas such as the abdomen and love handles, helping you achieve a slimmer and natural looking appearance without surgery or downtime.
SculpSure targets an destroys fat cells, which are then naturally absorbed and removed from the body. The procedure is comfortable, well-tolerated and takes 25 minutes to perform. Clinical studies report an average of 24% fat reduction with full results in 12 weeks.

Relax and soften those frown lines with Botox Cosmetic®!
There is no better way to relax, soften, and erase wrinkles caused by facial expression.
Botox Cosmetic® is a purified neurotoxin complex that is injected in minute amounts into specifically targeted muscles of facial expression. The muscle then relaxes producing softening and smoothing of targeted wrinkles. Many expression lines totally disappear. The wrinkles slowly reappear over 3-6 months (or longer) as the Botox wears off. Repeat treatments help you stay relaxed and refreshed in appearance.
Visit Botox Cosmetic® to find out more.
Botox can be used to achieve the following results:
- Improve wrinkles of the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows (your "elevens"), “crow's-feet”, “bunny lines” on the nose, “lipstick” lines of the upper lip, “necklace” lines of the neck
- Shape and arch the brow; “open up” the eye
- Improve the “gummy smile”
- Elevate the corners of the mouth
- Relax vertical bands of the neck (platysmal bands)

Skin Volumizers give you a youthful appearance - countering the deflation of skin
Loss of deep facial tissue volume occurs as we age. This allows the face to “deflate” resulting in a thin, hollow appearance over the temples, flattening of the eyebrow ridges with drooping, hollowness under the eyes giving a tired look, flattening of the cheek bones with sagging, deepening of the smile lines, and hollowness around the mouth producing collapse of the lips and a “skeletal” appearance. Fat loss over the back of the hands produces hollowness highlighting the appearance of the tendons and bones.
Skin volumizers can counter this deflation of the skin making your appearance youthful again. The volumizers we use are:
Juvaderm Voluma® XC
Wrinkles and lines aren’t the only signs of aging. Over time, the cheeks flatten, and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. Juvaderm Voluma® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area.
Sculptra and Sculptra Aesthetic are injectable FDA approved products for enhancement of facial volume in HIV positive patients with facial wasting and in aesthetic patients with facial volume loss respectively. The active agent is poly-L-lactic acid which acts as a collagen biostimulator. Turning on new collagen synthesis results in soft tissue volumetric enhancement producing a more youthful face. Results have been proven to last 18 to 24 months and possibly longer. Dr. McCune is a national trainer for these two products – a testimonial to his knowledge and expertise
Fat Autograft Transfer
This technique involves the placement of fat into the fatty tissues of the face and hands. This technique is used to restore volume to the lips and hands.
Advanced technology providing painless and inexpensive way to rejuvenate the skin.
A flashing panel of yellow light emitting diodes (LED’s) signals the collagen and elastin producing cells in the skin (fibroblasts) to become energized. This causes the fibroblasts to start manufacturing new collagen and elastin in the dermis. Benefits include improved skin smoothness and texture, reduction in fine lines, and a return of the “healthy glow” to your skin. Brown splotchy discoloration may fade as well.
An exciting extra benefit is that GentleWaves® Photomodulation has been proven to help diminish damage to the skin produced by injuries from acute sunburn, smoking, and other environment injuries. GentleWaves® treatment to an acute sunburn can rapidly eliminate redness and tenderness. Peeling may be eliminated. Less photodamage is produced in the epidermis and dermis. Photoaging can be minimized whether used as an “emergency treatment” for sunburn, a preventative maintenance therapy for the active outdoor lifestyle, or as an active rejuvenator of photodamage you have already developed. GentleWaves® Photomodulation can help you have healthier and nicer looking skin now and in the future.
Finally, GentleWaves® treatment immediately following many of the Juvescence procedures will enhance the visible benefits these procedures can create.
Why wait to try this painless, no downtime, and extremely affordable treatment?
