Mid-Level Practitioners
What is a Mid-Level Practitioner?
Dr. McCune has four mid-level practitioners who see most of our medical dermatology patients. A mid-level practitioner is either a Registered Nurse Practitioner or a Physician’s Assistant and is able to provide medical care and basic surgical services. Each of these highly educated health professionals is personally trained by Dr. McCune and is expertly qualified to deliver high quality, compassionate dermatologic care to our patients.
Dr. McCune has personally trained all of his mid-level practitioners to follow his protocol-driven approach to the diagnosis and treatment of medical and cosmetic dermatology conditions. Through daily on-site interactions, discussions, and record review, Dr. McCune closely and directly supervises the care given by his staff.
Introducing our Mid-Level Practitioners:
Brenda Lane, MSN, ARNP-C
Brenda has been with Kansas City Dermatology since 2004. She received her BSN from Pittsburg State in 1987 and her MSN/NP in 1998 from UMKC. She is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner, AANC and AANP. Brenda has worked as a Nurse Practitioner in orthopedics and dermatology. She is married with two children Alex age 15 and Shayna age 10. Brenda and her family reside in Olathe, Ks.
Amy Ronan, ARNP-BC
Amy is a Nurse Practitioner with nine years of experience who joined Kansas City Dermatology in 2008. Her education includes a BSN from the University of Kansas and a MSN from University of Illinois at Chicago. She is board certified by the PNCB. Her past experience includes pediatric intensive care and general pediatrics. She resides in Prairie Village with her husband Mike and basset hound, Fred.
Julia McCullough, MBA, MSN, ARNP-BC
Julia graduated from the University of Texas-Austin with a BSN. She received her Masters of Business Administration from the University of Dallas and achieved her MSN/NP from KU. She is certified by the ANCC as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a previous surgical nurse and has 20 years of experience in Healthcare Management and Consulting. Julia joined our practice in 2009. She is involved in mission work and has been to Romania twice on medical missions. Julia has two children Adam and Matt and enjoys running and cycling in her free time.
Matthew Patton, MS, MPA, PA
Matthew has a Master of Physician Assistant degree from Wichita State University with specialized training in dermatology. Additional educational experience includes Bachelors degrees in Biological Sciences and Speech Communications as well as a Masters in Educational Administration from Emporia State University. Before entering the medical field, Matthew was an instructor and coach at both the secondary and collegiate levels for 9 years. In his spare time, he enjoys running, hiking, working horses, and is involved in Protect the Flint Hills. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, and Association of Plastic Surgery Physician Assistants.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
Carol Russell, C.R.N.A.
Carol provides expert anesthesia and conscious sedation care at Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A. She works interdependently with Dr. McCune to ensure that your surgical experiences requiring twilight anesthesia are as safe and comfortable as possible.

Medical and Nursing Staff
Our medical staff additionally consists of well trained medical assistants, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses. All personnel at Kansas City Dermatology are certified in basic cardiac life support. At Kansas City Laser and Dermasurgery Center, P.A., the nursing personnel, advanced certified nurse anesthetist, and Dr. McCune are certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) for your personal safety and reassurance.

Esthetician Staff
Stacey A. Christian
Our medical esthetician, Stacey A. Christian has been practicing since 2003. A graduate of Johnson County Community College, she has spent the last several years working on the medical side of esthetics doing a variety of laser treatments, chemical peels, facials and microdermabrasions.
Stacey joined our practice in early 2009. She does anti-aging treatments such as hydrafacials, facials and peels, and has been trained personally by Dr. McCune to do laser hair reduction under his close supervision, and also does a variety of treatments to help enhance the medical program for our acne patients.
Stacey states she enjoys everything about her job but the best part is the people. “I love seeing new faces everyday.”

Practice Administrator
Karen Eggers
Karen Eggers, our practice administrator has been in the healthcare field for 37 years. She was trained and worked as a Registered X-Ray Technologist for 15 years in many different specialties of medicine both in the hospital and office setting. She has been with Kansas City Dermatology since it’s inception in 1987 and supervises our three facilities according to Dr. McCune’s practice policies, philosophies, protocols, and goals. Karen finds serving in the healthcare industry a rewarding career. She is married and has a daughter and son-in-law.

Office Manager
Shirley Sherwood
Shirley Sherwood serves as Office Manager.
She has been with Kansas City Dermatology since 1987 and oversees the day to day activities of the practice. She is originally from Minnesota and relocated to Kansas City in the early ‘70’s.
Shirley attended college in western Kansas where she met her husband of 37 years. They are now empty nesters having raised 3 children. Shirley states that it has been "one of her greatest privileges to be a part of the wonderful journey and many paths that have led KCD to where it is today".

Dr. McCune
Mark A. McCune, M.D. is the founder and medical director of our medical, surgical, and medispa facilities.
Dr. McCune is a native Kansan. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Kansas, he attended and graduated from medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, spending time at both the Kansas City and the Wichita campuses. He completed both his internship in internal medicine and dermatology residency at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. McCune entered private practice in Overland Park in 1981, and has practiced there ever since.
While at Mayo, Dr. McCune also underwent a training rotation in the Department of Plastic Surgery. Off-campus dermasurgical training was received at LSU, Tulane, and in the offices of internationally respected dermasurgeons. Since finishing his formal training, Dr. McCune has participated in numerous courses, work-shops, and seminars to learn new procedures and to enhance his diagnostic and dermasurgical skills.
Dr. McCune is the former director of dermatologic surgery and is currently an assistant professor in dermatology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He actively teaches dermasurgery to dermatology residents locally and from around the country in his office based surgical facility. Physicians come from the central United States to be trained by Dr. McCune to do Botox®, laser, and Thermage® procedures. He is a locally and nationally recognized expert in dermatology, dermasurgery, and office based surgery safety issues.
In 2001, the governor appointed Dr. McCune to the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. Dr. McCune was reappointed in 2005 and served until 2008. He was a member of committees involved in issues regarding the safety and supervision of office based surgery, supervision of non-physician health care providers, continuing medical education, and a member of the physician’s assistant council. He continues to serve the board as a reviewer of office-based surgery issues involving Kansas physicians.
